Battle of the Northwest Shuttles
December 10, 2003

Invitation

On Wednesday, December 10, Seattle ARTCC (ZSE) will be in the VATUSA Western Region Spotlight, and we invite all virtual airlines to participate in a Battle of the Northwest Shuttles -- flying back and forth between Seattle (KSEA) and Portland (KPDX).

Round up your fellow virtual airline (VA) pilots and try to win the title of the Best Northwest Shuttle by completing the most number of legs flown on this route. We will have controllers at both Seattle and Portland to help you along, and you can start on either end. The more pilots flying for your airline, the more legs will count toward the VA's total.

The competition will run from 6 p.m. PST (0200Z) until 10 p.m. PST (0600Z). For the first leg to count in the competition, it must be started (that is, pilot calls ATC for pushback from the gate) no earlier than 6 p.m., and the last leg must end (that is, pilot must be at gate and call for flight plan closure) no later than 10 p.m.

Naturally, this must all be done safely and following VATSIM and FAA rules, including only using 1x simulation speed and always flying less than 250 KIAS when below 10,000 feet.

If you'd like to promote your VA, please let us know you're participating and we'll add your logo here.

Procedures

Because we expect a large number of planes, pilots must use the following preferred routes between Seattle and Portland:

KSEA to KPDX

  • Flight Plan: SEA3.SEA.HELNS4 (SEA3 Chart; HELNS4 Chart)
  • Waypoints: KSEA SEA HELNS KRATR BTG KPDX (Squawkbox Flight Plan; MSFS Flight Plan)
  • Altitudes: Southeast course (odd thousands)
  • Expect vectors from KSEA to intercept the SEA 161 radial
  • Expect vectors from BTG to the final approach course for KPDX

KPDX to KSEA

  • Flight Plan: PTLD5.BTG.OLM5 (PTLD5 Chart; OLM5 Chart)
  • Waypoints: KPDX BTG OLM ARVAD FOURT KSEA (Squawkbox Flight Plan; MSFS Flight Plan)
  • Altitudes: Northeast course (even thousands)
  • Expect vectors from KPDX to intercept the BTG 329 radial
  • Expect vectors from FOURT to the final approach course for KSEA

Straight-line distance between KSEA and KPDX is 112 nm.

Expect delays if you file the wrong route or altitude.

If you want to fly into Seattle or Portland from your home airport before the event starts, please consult our preferred routes page to see if we've already planned a good route.

Background on the Spotlight Series

Every Wednesday, VATUSA invites pilots to fly in the Western Region of the United States, with extra ATC on hand to show you around this beautiful area.

To help us showcase the Western U.S. airspace and our talent, we have established the "Spotlight Mini-Event". Our Western Regional Wednesdays may be used by an ARTCC to feature an area or operation in their space. Other adjacent ARTCCs may be involved in supporting the area by providing departure services.

Pilots may fly anywhere they wish on a Spotlight Night, but we hope you will visit the Western Region, and make a flight in the Featured Area.
