Portland, Oregon (KPDX)
January 29, 2004

Invitation

On Thursday, January 29th, Seattle ARTCC (ZSE) will be in the VATUSA Western Region Spotlight, and we invite everyone to experience the challenging and beautiful approaches to Portland, Oregon (KPDX). Fresh from the one of the worst winter storms in Portland history, you can expect extremely challenging IFR approaches to Portland's river-side runways. We'll have Portland's TRACON, PDX_APP, covered, as well as possibly some outlying airports that see good quantities of real-world executive & general-aviation traffic, KHIO (Hillsboro) and KTTD (Troutdale).

The event will run from 6 p.m. local (0100Z) until we just can't stay awake any longer!

Procedures

Preferred routes into and out of Portland can be found on our Routes Page. We are happy to add new routes to these airports, so let us know if you don't find one you want.

If you want to create your own route into either airport, feel free to do so. Below are the basic published procedures for Portland.

For Controllers

We won't use any pre-sign-ups for this event; just show up and request a position from the highest controller connected. Visiting controllers will be welcome, however, please email us beforehand.

Background on the Spotlight Series

Every Wednesday, VATUSA invites pilots to fly in the Western Region of the United States, with extra ATC on hand to show you around this beautiful area.

To help us showcase the Western U.S. airspace and our talent, we have established the "Spotlight Mini-Event". Our Western Regional Wednesdays may be used by an ARTCC to feature an area or operation in their space. Other adjacent ARTCCs may be involved in supporting the area by providing departure services.

Pilots, of course, may fly anywhere they wish on a Spotlight Night, but we hope you will visit the Western Region, and make a flight in the Featured Area.
