Student (S1) Training

Goal: To prepare members for TRACON operations (Approach/Departure)

Accumulated at least fifteen (15) hours on a non-advanced Tower, Ground or Delivery position, OR accumulated at least eight ( 8 ) hours on an advanced Tower, Ground or Delivery position.
Read through the Approach procedures/policies posted on the ZSE ARTCC website.
Read through VATUSA study guides on Approach.
Complete ZSE Approach written exam. This exam will be assigned to you by the Training Administrator upon your request to begin the Approach training and certification process.
Request and complete training with ZSE Instructor or Mentor.
Complete OTS exam on ACSim (aka “Sweatbox”) program for Spokane Approach.
Promotion to the Senior Student (S3) level!

Approach Control

Once you are ready to learn about Approach control:

Read the Approach/Departure Study Guide on the VATUSA site.
Read the Seattle Approach Standard Operating Procedures.
Read the Radar contact & Mode C validation tutorial
Read the ZSE Approach Guide for S46 TRACON [pdf]
Observe and then practice the Approach duties at KSEA.
Ask a Mentor or Instructor to observe you as you are working, asking them for pointers and answers to questions that may have come up.
Learn about the differences at other major airports, such as KPDX and KGEG, and practice Approach Control there too.
