New Observer (OBS) Training

Welcome to the new student training program. Above all else, remember to be friendly, professional, and patient! It is ok to say "I don't know" and the only way to learn is to practice, practice, practice. Please don't be afraid to ask questions of the training staff as well as your fellow controllers. You'll find that everyone here is more than willing to answer them.

Goal: To prepare members for Local Control operations (Tower, Ground & Delivery):

Clearance Delivery

Begin your training by downloading our radar client of choice, VRC. Spend the time to go through its documentation; you'll need to know the basics of it to pass one of your initial written tests. Also, see this guide to getting setup to OBS on the network. ***NOTE: The guide gives instructions on what call sign to use as an OBS. These instructions do not apply. Please use the following format: ZSE_XX_OBS, replacing the X's with your initials.

Next, you'll want to start reading the Study Guides written by both VATUSA and the Seattle ARTCC Instructional Staff. It is recommended that you read the VATUSA Basic ATC Guide first as it covers Basic ATC in general. The Seattle Clearance Delivery SOP and Study Guide is tailored specifically to Seattle operations.

At this point, you should begin observing other controllers working live traffic in the KSEA area, paying special attention to how they give clearances and issue instructions.

After passing the initial ZSE tests, contact a Mentor or Instructor to get started with your hands-on training.

Ground Control

Once you've worked Delivery and have passed the Ground Control written test, you're ready to move on to Ground:

Read the VATUSA Ground Control study guide. Then, read the Seattle Ground SOP & Study Guide.

A Mentor or Instructor will work with you on the basics of Ground.

Tower Control

Now that you've gotten a handle on the operations of Delivery and Ground:

Read the VATUSA Tower Operations study guide. Then, read the Seattle Tower SOP & Study Guide.

A Mentor or Instructor will work with you on basic and advanced Tower operations. Be sure to ask about controlling other fields!
